The Forest Park Rangers battled hard Tuesday night against Providence High School in a rematch of last year’s Regional semifinal, but ultimately came up short, falling 4-1 to the Pioneers. The Rangers controlled good portions of the match and created several opportunities throughout the night, finishing with eight shots on target. Despite the final score, Forest Park showed plenty of fight against a Providence team that was able to capitalize on its opportunities. Forest Park came out strong to begin the match, maintaining good possession and creating a few early chances around the Providence goal. The Rangers were unable to find the breakthrough, however, and Providence gradually settled into the match. The Pioneers opened the scoring in the 10th minute when they converted on a corner kick. Just four minutes later, Providence struck again, once more finding the back of the net off a corner kick to take a 2-0 lead. Providence extended its advantage to 3-0 in the 23rd minute when the Pioneers quickly countered and finished the opportunity. The Rangers refused to back down and continued to battle their way back into the match. With just four minutes remaining in the first half, Forest Park finally found its breakthrough. Parker Wolf rose to the occasion and headed home a corner kick provided by Gabe Schemenaur to cut the Providence lead to 3-1. The Rangers entered halftime having recorded five shots compared to four for Providence, while goalkeeper Dexter Meyer had made one save. Providence came out of the halftime break looking to put the match out of reach and controlled much of the possession early in the second half. The Pioneers added their fourth goal in the eighth minute of the half to push the lead to 4-1. With the urgency increasing, the Rangers continued to battle and found good possession and several chances over the final 32 minutes. Forest Park continued to push forward and finished the night with eight shots on target, but was unable to find the additional goals needed to close the gap. The Rangers fall to 9-5 on the season and will now use the short break to rest and recover as the postseason approaches. Forest Park returns to action next Tuesday, September 29, when the Rangers travel to North Posey for their second to last regular season match. JV Season Comes to a Close The Forest Park JV squad followed the varsity match with a hard-fought 2-1 defeat. Freshman Easton Beoglin scored the lone goal for the Rangers. Tuesday's match brings the JV season to a close. The Rangers can now turn their attention toward the varsity postseason push as they look to finish the regular season strong.
