The Forest Park 7th Grade Boys Basketball team traveled to Haubstadt to play in their 4-team tournament. This was the first time that FP has played in this tourney. The Rangers started the afternoon off with a very tough team in Haubstadt. After they lost the first game, the Rangers played Mount Vernon, and Blake Morrison was able to hit a buzzerbeater 3 to win the game for the Rangers. The FP 7th Grade team struggled in the first game against a very good Haubstadt team. With their height and speed, the Rangers were only able to score 2 points in the first half. The Rangers never gave up, but just couldn't hit layups and get stops on the defensive end. The Rangers scored 8 points in the second half but ended up losing 34-10. The Rangers were able to get off to a good start, scoring 15 points in the first quarter and allowing 11 points. The Rangers then struggled to get stops in the second quarter and found themselves down at halftime 22-27. After another rough 3rd quarter, FP was down 26-35. Coach Hochgesang preached and preached that this game was far from over and that he believed his group could go on a run. That they did. The Rangers were able to score 18 points in the 4th quarter to Mount Vernon's 8. FP found themselves down 6 points with a minute to go and Coach Hochgesang still believed the Rangers were going to win this game. After great defensive stops and layups/free throws made by the Rangers, FP found themselves down 2 points with 10 seconds to go. The Rangers had the ball under their own baskets and Coach Hochgesang drew up a play for the Rangers to win this game. Mount Vernon threw the Rangers off with them set up in a zone underneath the basket, but the Rangers were able to get the ball in. FP then had to go in scramble mode and Blake Morrison had the ball. He put up a 3 with seconds to go and he HIT IT, giving the Rangers a 1 point lead with 1 second left on the clock. Mount Vernon then called a timeout and the Ranger boys went crazy. Coach Hochgesang had to calm the boys down and tell them this game was not over and that they had to get a stop with 1 second left. Mount Vernon through a full court pass to their very tall big man, but Cash Lueken was able to strip it from him and MV was not able to get a shot off. The Rangers battled back and won a much needed game to give the team some confidence. FP somehow won this game with a lot of turnovers and a lot of missed free throws, but both Coach Hochgesang and Coach Nalley were proud of their team.
